Equilibrium rotational stability and figure of Mars

Studies extending over three decades have concluded that the current orientation of the martian rotation pole is unstable. Specifically, the gravitational figure of the planet, after correction for a hydrostatic form, has been interpreted to indicate that the rotation pole should move easily between the present position and a site on the current equator, 90◦ from the location of the massive Tha...

Rotational propulsion enabled by inertia.

The fluid mechanics of small-scale locomotion has recently attracted considerable attention, due to its importance in cell motility and the design of artificial micro-swimmers for biomedical applications. Most studies on the topic consider the ideal limit of zero Reynolds number. In this paper, we investigate a simple propulsion mechanism --an up-down asymmetric dumbbell rotating about its axis...

Classical rotational inertia of solid 4He.

The observation of reduced rotational inertia in a cell containing solid 4He has been interpreted as evidence for superfluidity of the solid. We propose an alternative explanation: slippage of the solid, due to grain boundary premelting between the solid and dense adsorbed layers at the container wall. We calculate the range of film thickness, and determine the viscosity that will account for t...

Detecting the Moments of Inertia of a Molecule via Its Rotational Spectrum, Ii

Let G be one of the three-dimensional compact simple Lie groups SU(2) or SO(3). The Laplace-Beltrami spectrum is shown to mutually distinguish isometry classes of left-invaraint metrics on G. Consequently, the rotational spectrum of a molecule determines its moments of inertia.
